National Heart Awareness Month/ A-1 Home Care San Dimas

Many people don't know that February is National Heart Awareness Month! This is exciting news at A-1 Home Care. So we'll be getting right on the boat and sharing info about maintaining good heart health.

There are many intricacies to the human body, least of all the heart. Heart attacks occur when there are blockages in the tiny ventricles of the heart, depriving it of necessary oxygen and resulting in the death of heart cells. This is a heart attack.

Certain factors make it more likely that you will develop coronary artery disease and have a heart attack. These risk factors include some things you cannot change. If you are a man over age 45 or a woman over age 55, you are at greater risk. Having a family history of early heart disease is another risk factor. You are also at risk if you have a personal history of angina or previous heart attack.

However, much of this can be helped with good diet, exercise, and relaxation.

A-1 Home Care arranges Live In Caregivers who provide round the clock heart attack care. Visit http://www.sandimasinhomecare.com for home care in San Dimas, Glendora, Diamond Bar, Chino Hills, Pomona, El Monte and other neighborhoods around the Los Angeles County.

Holiday Treats for Happy Holidays/ Merry Christmas from A-1 Home Care!

Christmas is a time of eating, fun, and sharing. For those of us who don't have the daunting task of preparing the main meal, it's always nice to bring something along. That's why we at A-1 Home Care have dug up this recipe for gingerbread cupcakes that can be taken along for an after dinner treat.

Our team cares about the health of our readers, and we encourage you to use lower fat options and organic ingredients where possible. Happy Holidays!

Gingerbread Cupcakes with Vanilla Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 1¾ cups unbleached all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • ⅛ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup packed dark brown sugar
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk

Frosting

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, warmed to room temperature
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, plus more for garnishing
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk

    DIRECTIONS

    1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 12 muffin tins or 24 mini muffin tins.
    2. Combine the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg and salt.
    3. In a separate bowl, whisk together melted butter, brown sugar, molasses and egg.
    4. Add ¼ cup of the milk to the melted butter mixture plus half of the dry mixture, stirring well. Add remaining dry ingredients and milk until combined.
    5. Pour batter into muffin tins. Bake for 20 to 22 minutes, or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Remove cupcakes from oven and cool on a rack for at least a half hour.
    6. While the cupcakes are cooking and cooling, beat butter and cream cheese until light and fluffy.
    7. Add sugar, cinnamon and vanilla.
    8. Add the milk, a tablespoon at a time, until the frosting is just spreadable. Do not add too much milk. If the frosting is warm, cover and place in refrigerator for a few minutes before frosting cupcakes.
    9. Once the cupcakes are completely cooled, fill a piping bag with frosting and pipe large swirls onto the tops of each cupcake. Lightly sprinkle cinnamon on top of frosting for decoration.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Modern Thanksgiving staples like cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes and pumpkin pie were not available at the 1621 celebration. Pumpkin pie would be introduced at the following year’s feast, but there’s no mention of cranberry sauce until the 1660s, about 40 years after the colonists’ first gathering. Also, pilgrims of the time wouldn’t have been eating sweet potatoes, because there weren’t any potatoes at all around that time. Green bean casserole wouldn’t come into the mix for another 300-ish years, when it was invented in 1955 by Campbell’s Soup.
