Elder Care and Memory Loss in San Dimas

It's not unusual to forget the name of someone you just met or go into a room and realize you have no idea why you're in the kitchen.  We all have these momentary memory lapses, especially with all the distractions in our lives.  But when should you be concerned that it's a sign of something more serious and what can you do to keep your mind sharp?

Webmd.com has several tips to help in their article "Improve Your Memory" and you can determine if someone you love is showing signs of Dementia or Alzheimer's disease or just everyday forgetfulness with the following guidelines:

Dementia is a condition affecting mostly seniors and elderly.  They show signs of short term memory loss, confusion and difficulty concentrating.  They may need step-by-step instructions to complete tasks and have trouble thinking problems through to a solution.  Slight changes in their personality and behavior may also develop.

Alzheimer's disease is similar but the person will forget names of well known people and things, become frustrated when trying to complete everyday tasks.  They have trouble with abstract thought and difficulty with time and place.  Someone with Alzheimer's will show severe changes in personality, hygiene, mood and behavior.  Instead of mild confusion or short term memory loss, they may forget an item exists or that an event ever happened.

If you or someone you know is showing either set of symptoms, a medical exam by a trusted doctor is in order.  The sooner you have a diagnoses, the sooner treatment can begin.
